Elder
Care By Visiting Angels
A Guide for Family, Friends and Loved Ones.
Many times Elders have difficulty accepting that they
need help. Letting someone else manage for them may symbolize
their greatest fear: inevitable decline and eventual loss
of independence.
This resistance can be overcome with patience and understanding.
Involving Elders in the decision making process can help
to relieve fears that they are no longer in control of their
own lives.
Make sure to focused on the issues that elders feel are important
and not just what family and friends think are the main concerns.
Those concerns will be accepted more easily if they tie into
the concerns of the Elder.
A professional evaluation can go a long way in helping Elders
decide to accept in-home assistance.
But, please don't nag about this evaluation. Simply plant
the seed and water it from time to time.
Eventfully, most elders will realize that they cannot care for
themselves as they used to and that accepting help will enable
them to maintain independence longer than would otherwise be
possible. Seeing a doctor seems to make the decision easier
also.
It is often wise to have the family members meet prior to having
the loved one attend a professional evaluation. This will give
the family an opportunity to clearly define the concerns of
all involved. A family with clearly defined goals can present
a more convincing case to the Elder, than a family that cannot
agree. The statement "strength in numbers" certainly
does apply here.
One last thought before moving on...
Be direct when speaking to Elders about having a home care
agency come out and meet with them. Be specific about the
tasks a caregiver will perform and won't perform. Let them
know that they are in control and that the home care process
can add significantly to everyone's peace of mind as well
as to their independence.
Keep all your discussions positive when speaking with Elders.
Treat them as equals and don't parent!!! Remember to let your
loved one make decisions. Your job is to empower your Elders,
while you help guide them through the process.
